A robot reads your CV first. Here is which one.

Safaricom runs Oracle. Britam runs Taleo. M-KOPA and Andela run Ashby. Tala runs Lever. Each of those systems chews through your CV differently — and the formatting that sails through one gets you silently filtered by another. We checked the live job feed of every major Kenyan tech employer we track and wrote down what we found.

Part one · the map

Who runs what

Every row below was confirmed against the employer's own live careers feed in October 2026. Employers do change systems, so treat this as a snapshot — but the pattern holds: the funded startups sit on modern, parser-friendly systems, and the big corporates sit on Oracle products that make you re-type your whole life into a form.

Employer System behind the apply button What that means for you
Safaricom Oracle Recruiting Cloud Your uploaded CV is parsed, then you re-enter everything by hand anyway. The form fields are what get searched — not your PDF. Budget 40 minutes for a first application.
Britam Oracle Taleo Oldest system on this list. Hates tables, columns, headers and footers. Build a profile once and reuse it — Taleo keeps it between applications.
M-KOPA Ashby Clean parse, short form, structured screening questions. Your answers to those questions matter more than your CV design.
Andela Ashby Same as above. Skills are matched as discrete tags, so name your stack explicitly — "React", not "modern frontend frameworks".
One Acre Fund Greenhouse Parses a plain PDF almost perfectly. Keyword search runs on the parsed text, so the words in your CV are the words recruiters find you by.
Jumia Greenhouse Same engine. Expect a cover-letter field — it is usually optional, and usually read when a shortlist is close.
Zipline Greenhouse Posts Kenya roles alongside global ones on one board. Filter by location before you apply or you will waste a week.
GiveDirectly Greenhouse Heavy on structured application questions. Written answers carry real weight here.
Tala Lever Lever auto-fills the form from your CV or LinkedIn. Check what it filled in — a bad parse is the single most common silent rejection.
Apollo Agriculture Lever Same auto-fill behaviour. Lever also dedupes applicants, so a second application to the same role does nothing.
Sun King Pinpoint Short, forgiving form. Volume is high across Africa — being specific about your county and language skills genuinely helps.
Watu Credit JazzHR Plain form, light parsing. Almost everything a screener sees is your CV itself, so the first third of page one does the work.
ACRE Africa Careers page + email No ATS at all — a human opens your mail. Your subject line and your first two sentences are the entire filter.
Canonical Greenhouse Fully remote, hires "home based — EMEA", which includes Kenya. Written application essays are a formal, scored part of the process.
⚠️ The pattern worth memorising: if the apply link takes you to a URL containing oraclecloud.com or taleo.net, you are in a form-first system — the CV is secondary and the fields are everything. If it takes you to greenhouse.io, lever.co, ashbyhq.com or pinpointhq.com, your CV file is parsed and searched directly, so formatting is everything.
Part two · the rules

Six formatting rules that satisfy all seven systems

You cannot keep a different CV per employer. You do not need to. These six rules are the intersection — the format that parses cleanly in Oracle, Taleo, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Pinpoint and JazzHR at the same time.

RULE 01

One column. Always.

Two-column CVs — the ones with a coloured sidebar — are read left-to-right across the page by most parsers. Your job titles end up merged with your skills list. This single choice breaks more Kenyan applications than anything else.

RULE 02

No tables, text boxes or icons.

Taleo drops table contents entirely. Icons and logos become nothing. If a phone icon replaces the word "Phone", some parsers lose your number. Write the words.

RULE 03

Use the boring headings.

"Work Experience", "Education", "Skills", "Certifications". Not "Where I've Made Impact". Parsers match section headings against a fixed dictionary; a creative heading means that section is never categorised.

RULE 04

Dates as MM/YYYY, right of the role.

03/2024 – Present. Not "Mar '24 to date", not seasons, not just years. Date parsing is how systems calculate your years of experience, and that number is often a hard filter.

RULE 05

Mirror the posting's exact nouns.

If the ad says "Node.js", write Node.js — not Node, not NodeJS. Keyword matching is literal. Put the stack in a Skills line and inside the bullet where you used it.

RULE 06

Submit a PDF — unless asked for Word.

Modern systems parse PDF cleanly. Taleo and some Oracle configurations still prefer .docx. Keep both exports of the same file, named Firstname-Lastname-Role.pdf, never "CV final v3".

✅ The 60-second test: open your CV, select all, copy, and paste into a blank plain-text note. What you see is almost exactly what the parser sees. If the order is scrambled, your dates vanish or your name is missing — that is your rejection, before any human was involved.
Part three · the skeleton

Copy this structure

Paste it into a blank document, replace the content, keep the order and the headings. It is deliberately plain — that is the point.
