DStv collapses six bouquets into three — and cuts Premium by KES 4,400

DStv Kenya's biggest subscription reset in years lands in November: six tiers become three, with Select at KES 1,500, Compact at KES 3,000 and Premium at KES 7,300 — down from KES 11,700, a 37.6% cut worth KES 52,800 a year. Compact and Compact Plus merge at the new KES 3,000 price, saving Compact Plus homes KES 4,300 a month, while Lite, Access and Family customers move to Select. The retreat follows a bruising run — active accounts fell 8.3% from 270,503 to 248,053 between December and March — and comes days after word of a standalone sports package, as Canal+ resets the pay-TV maths for a streaming-era Kenya.

Google Translate goes background-mode — with Swahili on the list

Live translation on Android now keeps running when you switch apps or lock the screen, and iPhones can play translated audio through the earpiece for noisy places like airports. Swahili sits among the 70-plus languages supported for live audio translation, and Google says more than a third of live sessions already run past five minutes. The catch for Kenyan users: offline live translation stays exclusive to Pixel 9, 10 and 11 devices — and Swahili isn't yet in its offline pairs.

From Eastlands to Copenhagen: the Kenyan wiring Nordic money to African startups

Charles Kinga — raised in Nairobi's Eastlands and Makueni, now 25 years in Denmark — heads TechBBQ's Nordic-Africa Initiative, and built its first Nordic-Africa Startup Summit in roughly 100 days before staging the 2026 edition at Copenhagen's Bella Centre. Mobile money's next fight is engagement, not sign-ups

At MTN Group's fintech summit in Johannesburg, operators conceded the industry's headline user counts mask shallow usage: Ghana's MoMo clears over 26 million transactions a day, yet fewer than 0.3% of its users actively invest, and only a sliver keep a 30-day savings habit. The pivot — measuring success by savings, credit and investment uptake rather than new registrations — reads directly onto Kenya, where mobile money penetration maxed out years ago and the growth question is what customers do beyond sending cash.
